Obtaining a Google Maps API Key

Several areas of re:Members AMS allow the display of Google maps—for example, when viewing the locations of committee members, or a layout of accommodations for an event. For the system to display this map, a Google Maps API key must be requested from Google and saved to the re:Members AMS site.

This can be done in 3 steps:

  1. Create a Google account. (If you already have a Google account, skip this step.)

  2. Obtain a Google Maps API key.

  3. Save the API key to re:Members AMS.

Step 1: Create a Google Account Login

To obtain a Google Maps API key, it’s necessary to log in to the Google Developers Console. Users must have a Google Account to log in. For users without an existing Google Account, follow the instructions below to create one.

Users with an existing Google Account, please proceed to Step 2.

  1. Navigate to https://accounts.google.com/servicelogin to access the Google login page.

  2. Click the Create Account hyperlink.

  3. Complete the Google Create Account form.

Step 2: Get a Google Maps API Key

Anyone with a Google Account can access the Google Developers Site to retrieve a Google Maps API.

To obtain this API:

  1. Log in to a Google Account.

  2. Navigate to the Google Developers Site by following the URL: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/get-api-key

  3. In the Get API Key section, click Get Started.

  4. In the Enable Google Maps Platform window, select Maps and click Continue.

  5. Enter a new project name and click Yes to agree to the Terms of Service. Complete the setup of the billing account.

  6. Click Create and Enable API.

The API Key will appear. Copy and paste this API Key into a Notepad document to preserve it for use in Step 3.

  7. Click the API Console hyperlink to restrict the key’s usage.

  8. Credentials for the API key appear.

    1. Under Key Restriction, select HTTP Referrers.

    2. Under Accepts requests from these HTTP referrers (web sites), enter the BASE URL Domain. In the Base URL Domain, replace “http://” with an asterisk: “*”. Enter an asterisk after the URL as well. For example, the URL domain “http://baseurldomian.org” should be entered as: *baseurldomain.org/*

    1. Click Save.

  9. Click Finish.
